Baul singer Abul Sarkar, who had been jailed following his arrest in a case alleging that he hurt religious sentiments and made offensive comments, has now been granted interim bail for six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to Prothom Alo on Monday, lawyer Gazi Kamrul Islam Sojol said that although the case includes accusations of religious defamation, there is no substantive evidence to support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The High Court approved Sarkar\u2019s six-month bail and issued a rule in the matter, noting that if no other cases are pending against him, there would be no legal obstacle to his release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After being denied bail by a lower court, Sarkar appealed to the High Court. His petition was taken up for hearing and later considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the proceedings, Sojol represented Sarkar, while Deputy Attorney General Sultana Akter Ruby appeared on behalf of the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case stems from allegations that Sarkar made offensive and blasphemous remarks during a folk music performance at the Khala Pagli fair in Jabra, under Ghior upazila in Manikganj, on 4 November. A video of the incident later circulated on social media, prompting widespread criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the night of 19 November, members of the Manikganj Detective Branch (DB) police detained Sarkar from a musical event in Madaripur. He was brought to the district DB office the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That same day, Mufti Md Abdullah, imam of Ghior Bazar Mosque, filed a case against him at Ghior Police Station, accusing Sarkar of insulting Islamic beliefs and making provocative remarks intended to offend religious sentiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sarkar was officially shown as arrested in the case and sent to jail on 20 November by the Senior Judicial Magistrate\u2019s Court in Manikganj. He was granted bail in the case on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
