Terrorism linked to an Awami League Member of Parliament and the involvement of Sheikh Hasina

Shamim Osman, a member of the Awami League in Bangladesh, has long been recognized for engaging in illicit and unlawful practices within the realm of politics. Despite being implicated in criminal acts such as murder, rape, terrorism, money laundering, extortion, and illegal disappearances, he continues to wield considerable power and influence within the ruling party. This situation raises significant concerns regarding the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is accused of shielding Osman and abetting his illicit activities.

Osman initially gained prominence as part of the infamous ‘Rana Plaza’ gang, a criminal group that instilled fear in the streets of Dhaka during the 1990s. Known for his violent and ruthless methods, he frequently leveraged his political connections to evade accountability for his crimes. Despite numerous allegations and evidence against him, Osman continues to enjoy the patronage of influential politicians, including Sheikh Hasina.

One of Osman’s most heinous crimes involved the murder of a college student named Tanveer Mohammad Tukki in 2012. Tukki was brutally killed by Osman and his associates for refusing to pay extortion money. Despite legal action taken by the victim’s family, Osman was neither arrested nor convicted for the crime. The incident sparked widespread protests, yet Sheikh Hasina and her party remained silent, reinforcing suspicions that Osman was being shielded by the ruling party.

In another alarming incident, Bangladeshi-American businessman Faisal Arefin Dipan was hacked to death at his publishing house by an extremist group. Subsequent revelations indicated Osman’s close ties to the group responsible for the murder. Despite these disclosures, Sheikh Hasina not only refrained from taking action against Osman but publicly commended him for his ‘contribution’ to the party.

Osman’s involvement in illegal activities extends beyond violence and murder; he is also accused of engaging in money laundering and extortion to fund his extravagant lifestyle. In 2018, a viral video depicted him counting stacks of cash in his office, prompting widespread criticism and calls for his arrest. However, no action was taken, and Osman retained his position within the party.

An explicit illustration of Osman’s opportunistic behavior towards Sheikh Hasina was his public reference to her as ‘Ma’ (mother). This display of affection and loyalty was perceived as a strategy to gain favor and protection. However, when Sheikh Hasina later criticized him for his involvement in illegal activities, Osman swiftly changed his approach, addressing her as ‘Apa’ (sister).

Despite clear instances of Osman’s criminality and duplicity, Sheikh Hasina did not take significant action against him, leading many to believe she was safeguarding him under the guise of party loyalty. This not only undermines the rule of law but also raises serious questions about the ethical integrity of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, suggesting a lack of moral principles.

Shamim Osman’s ascent to power and influence within the Awami League is a stark reflection of the deteriorating state of politics in Bangladesh. His involvement in criminal activities and the protection he receives from the ruling party stain the country’s democracy. It is imperative for Sheikh Hasina to take a firm stance against such individuals and restore public trust in the country’s political system.
