Two individuals in Bangladesh have been apprehended by the police for their social media posts criticizing the newly constructed Padma multipurpose bridge. The bridge, which is the longest in Bangladesh, has been hailed by the government as a symbol of national pride and a remarkable achievement. However, its construction was marred by delays, political conflicts, exorbitant costs, and allegations of corruption. The arrest of the first individual, Abul Kalam Azad, occurred in the coastal district of Noakhali. Azad had uploaded a derogatory post on his Facebook page, expressing his desire to urinate on the bridge. This post incited anger among the residents of his hometown, Companiganj, and was subsequently removed. Azad vehemently denied being responsible for the post, claiming that his Facebook account had been hacked. Nevertheless, he was sent to jail by the district’s chief judicial magistrate. The second arrest involved Mohammad Bayezid Talha, who gained notoriety through a viral TikTok video. In the video, Talha demonstrated his ability to unscrew nuts and bolts from the bridge using only his bare hands. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh’s police refuted Talha’s claim, stating that he must have used tools to accomplish this feat. The CID accused Talha of intentionally undermining the construction standards of the bridge. These arrests highlight the intense scrutiny and sensitivity surrounding any criticism directed towards the Padma Bridge.
