The newly appointed minister for housing and public works affairs, has taken legal action against his opponent, Lion Firozur Rahman Olio, by filing a Tk 100 crore defamation case with the Brahmanbaria Joint District Judge Court. This comes after they both ran against each other for the Brahmanbaria-3 constituency in the 12th parliamentary polls. Representing the minister, lawyer Abdul Zabbar filed the case against Firozur, claiming that he made false and damaging statements against his client in an attempt to confuse the public.

According to the case statement, Firozur had originally been an Awami League candidate, but became independent after failing to secure the party’s nomination. When it seemed unlikely that he would win the election, Firozur resorted to making fabricated and defamatory remarks about the minister in various places. The case statement also mentioned an instance where Firozur made a false statement about giving the minister Tk 50,000 for the construction of the University of Brahmanbaria 30-35 years ago.

However, the lawyer stated that there was no prior connection between Firozur and the minister during that time. Zabbar argued that these false statements have greatly damaged the minister’s reputation, which is estimated to be worth Tk 100 crore. He also mentioned that a legal notice was sent to Firozur on December 28, asking him to withdraw his derogatory remarks and apologize to the plaintiff, but no action was taken. In response, Firozur claimed that he did not receive the notice as he was preoccupied with the election. However, the case against him still stands and he will have to face the consequences of his defamatory actions.

This is the manner in which he treats his adversaries when faced with opposition. He carries out these reprehensible actions while operating within the framework of the Awami League, and no one has the courage to question him. Obaidul Moktadir Chowdhury is implicated in numerous homicides within the city of Brahmanbaria, yet he has not faced any legal consequences thus far. He commits these wrongdoings alongside his group of trained thugs, always remaining hidden from public view. When the family of a victim attempts to file a case against him, the police refuse to do so due to his influential position. R A M Muktadir Chowdhury has assaulted several journalists in Brahmanbaria on different occasions. Even journalists themselves are afraid to write anything against him, and we are a minority in this regard. This is not an isolated incident limited to Brahmanbaria; similar occurrences are taking place throughout Bangladesh under the protection of the Awami League. It is imperative for the people of our society to awaken and voice their protest against these injustices; otherwise, there will be no remedy, and we will continue to suffer under oppression.
