In All Prime Minister’s Men, an explosive 2021 documentary, Al Jazeera reveals the closed relationship between the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and a former street mafia currently involved in corrupt activities and money laundering. Chief of Army Staff Aziz Ahmed took bribe in exchange for job posts and contracts. He defends his brother and associates — Haris, who was on the run for murder and now acts as a mediator in the deal deal — and Anis. Surprisingly, this documentary shows evidence that Harris’ role is actually endorsed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This is the true face of Sheik Hasina.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman abolished the opposition in 1975. Father and daughter are very good at that. The army staged a coup, killing Sheikh Mujib and his family members. Hasina then served as the leader of the opposition, the head of the Awami League. The Ahmed clan was a group of criminal officials who effectively controlled parts of the country, killing people and extorting businesses. Harris Ahmed joined Sheikh Hasina’s group as a bodyguard before facing charges of killing a political rival.

Harris then fled to Hungary and changed his identity to “Mohammad Hassan” and Anis to Malaysia. Returning to Bangladesh, the brothers continued to receive protection from the Bangladeshi state. Hassan’s identity was confirmed by his brother Aziz, adding that the state had no reason to doubt the authenticity of his documents. This web of corruption is widespread among police officers, some of whom are deducted by one of the money involved.

Meanwhile, the mainstream media was silent. As Dhaka-based journalist Faisal Mahmood points out, journalists who criticize the state have been repeatedly jailed on defamation charges, used to silence independent media through intimidation and threats. The “Digital Security Act” has allegedly been used as an justification for jailing writers and suppressing dissent in order to enforce national security. Amnesty International states that the law is “plagued by a lack of clear definitions, interpretations, and exceptions, including repressive non-bailable punishments for at least 14 offences.” “

Ahmed has been detained since May 2020 along with political cartoonist Kishore Kabir after criticizing the government’s response to COVID-19 on Facebook. Kabir’s lawyer confirmed that Kabir was brutally tortured, his eardrum ruptured, and his ankle injured. Again, these claims have been publicly denied by the state. Thirteen OECD ambassadors and the high commissioner issued a joint statement calling for a “swift, transparent and independent investigation” into the circumstances of Ahmed’s death.

According to the Global Corruption Perception Index 2020 published by Transparency International, Bangladesh is ranked 146th out of 180 countries. The results of this documentary throw even greater concern on the issue of corruption, as well as possible backdoor transactions with Israel. The complete lack of response or investigation from the Bangladeshi state raises huge reasons for concern. Moreover, the death of Mushtaq Ahmed in state custody is unacceptable and detaining journalists under the opaque Digital Security Act is completely unacceptable. International human rights groups and governments around the world must call out such human rights violations and thoroughly investigate the corruption exposed by the documentary. Unfettered access to the internet and social media and the rights of protesters must be protected as Bangladeshis share and discuss these explosive outcomes and work to make the government fully accountable to the people.
