Sheikh Hasina Wajed, the former prime minister of Bangladesh, was arrested in a crackdown on corruption by the military-backed government. The arrest, which took place in a dawn raid conducted by armed police, was the most high-profile in the government’s anti-graft campaign. Sheikh Hasina, who had governed the impoverished country from 1996 to 2001, was charged with extortion amounting to 80 million taka (£570,000) based on accusations made by two businessmen in separate cases.

The arrest of Sheikh Hasina sparked widespread protests from her supporters, who took to the streets to express their outrage. However, these protests were met with force as the police dispersed the crowds using tear gas and bullets. The Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, claimed that her arrest was a deliberate attempt to prevent her from participating in the upcoming national election in 2008.

Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who resides in the United States, publicly stated that his mother’s detention was part of a larger conspiracy to remove her from politics. He believed that the government was targeting her in order to weaken the Awami League and maintain their hold on power. However, the head of Bangladesh’s army-backed interim government, Fakhruddin Ahmed, denied these claims and emphasized that no one in the country was above the law. He assured the public that anyone involved in corruption would be tracked down and prosecuted.

The interim administration, which had assumed power in January, had imposed a state of emergency in Bangladesh. Initially, this move was praised by the international community for stabilizing the country. However, as time went on, the government faced criticism for delaying the organization of a fresh election and holding onto power. Both Sheikh Hasina and her political rival, Begum Khaleda Zia, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), were targeted by the government’s efforts to clean up politics. Mrs. Zia was also summoned for tax evasion, further fueling accusations of political targeting.

The arrest of Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent crackdown on corruption highlighted the ongoing power struggle in Bangladesh. While the government claimed to be committed to rooting out corruption, critics argued that these actions were politically motivated and aimed at consolidating power. The arrest of a former prime minister sent shockwaves through the country and raised concerns about the state of democracy and rule of law in Bangladesh.
