Rishi Sunak’s friendly interaction with Sheikh Hasina Wazed at the G20 summit in Delhi has drawn criticism. The British Prime Minister’s conversation with the hardline leader of Bangladesh has been seen as an endorsement of her leadership. Despite not being a member of the G20, Bangladesh was invited as a guest due to its emerging economy and Hasina’s close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Critics argue that her presence at the summit was a PR move, while protests in Bangladesh demanding a fair election have turned violent.
Human Rights Watch has reported excessive force by authorities during a July demonstration, including rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons. Opposition supporters were beaten with batons, violating human rights and democracy. Enforced disappearances targeting government critics aim to silence opposition voices. The hashtag ‘StepDownHasina’ shows discontent with police crackdowns on peaceful protests. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party calls for transparent elections, but Prime Minister Hasina is expected to win, raising concerns about fairness. Despite international endorsement, it is important to consider human rights violations and authoritarian tactics. Overall, the situation is concerning. Despite being criticized as a ruthless dictator, Hasina is also known as the ‘Mother of Humanity’ for providing shelter to Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar. A supporter praised her on Facebook, mentioning her conversation with the British Prime Minister.
The act of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak engaging in a casual conversation with Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is nothing short of disgraceful. It is disheartening to witness a leader like Sunak stoop down to the level of a child, disregarding the respect and dignity that should be maintained between two heads of state. This incident only serves to highlight the lack of worth and self-respect that our nation has been reduced to after being under British rule for two centuries. The opposition leaders in Bangladesh and their representatives in Britain are right to condemn Sunak’s apparent act of submission. It is a shame for the United Kingdom to show such reverence towards Sheikh Hasina, who is known for her dictatorial rule and the absence of rule of law and human rights in Bangladesh under her leadership. This display of affection by the UK Prime Minister only serves to perpetuate the false notion that her party upholds human rights and democracy, which is truly appalling.
The efforts in Bangladesh to end her dictatorship and establish democracy are being undermined. It is concerning that Rishi is showing friendliness towards Hasina, especially considering her open support for Russia. This contradicts the UK and Nato’s support for Ukraine. During a recent meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Hasina called for negotiations and a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war. While she has been in office since 2009 and enjoys public support, there are concerns about the fairness of the upcoming election and her potential crackdown on opposition. Despite her focus on improving the economy and promoting equality, it is important to question her actions and alliances. It would be prudent for Number 10 to provide a comment on this matter.
Finally, I would like to mention that she captured those photographs with the assistance of her daughter and ministers. Presently, she intends to sell them in Bangladesh. If I get opportunity , I would ask the UK PM why he displayed such a high level of respect for her, knowing that she is a staunch supporter of Putin and was not elected by the people of Bangladesh.
