The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) launched a scathing critique of the Awami League government, vehemently denouncing its alleged involvement in corruption, which, according to the BNP, has now gained global acknowledgment. The focal point of their criticism stemmed from the recent conviction of Bangladeshi Member of Parliament Mohammad Shahid Islam by a Kuwaiti court. Addressing the media in a press conference held in Dhaka, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the BNP’s senior joint secretary general, expressed deep concern over the tarnished reputation of the nation and accused the government of turning a blind eye to such critical matters.
Rizvi went on to establish a direct link between the government and the convicted MP, Mohammad Shahid Islam, underlining that engaging in fraudulent activities of such magnitude would not be possible without the implicit support and patronage of the government. This connection, as asserted by Rizvi, further exemplified the pervasive nature of corruption within the Awami League administration.
Additionally, Rizvi drew attention to Bangladesh’s standing in the Transparency International corruption index, expressing disappointment at the country’s position. This condemnation served as a broader commentary on the perceived governance issues within the nation.
Furthermore, the BNP leader shed light on the recent elections in Chattogram City Corporation, revealing that over 78% of voters had boycotted the electoral process. This substantial voter boycott was presented as a clear indication of public dissatisfaction and disapproval of the prevailing political climate under the Awami League government.
The press conference, attended by central leaders of the BNP, including Sahida Rafique, Abul Khayer Bhuiyan, and Abdus Salam Azad, showcased a unified stance against what the party perceives as systemic issues plaguing the nation under the current administration. The event served as a platform for the BNP to amplify their concerns about corruption, governance, and the overall state of affairs in Bangladesh.
