During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, the majority of those involved, excluding some members of the Awami League, prioritized the cause over personal considerations such as family or individual gains. Many of their family members faced arrest by the Pakistani army during the conflict.
After the victory in December 1971, individuals like Begum Ainuddin, Begum Habibullah Bahar, Begum Gaffar Halder, Begum Zebunnesa Jahangir, and other wives of freedom fighters were released from Dhaka Cantonment. Begum Khaleda Zia and her two children were also among those freed.
Ziaur Rahman, present in Sylhet at the time of Bangladesh’s independence, sent a comrade from Z Force to bring Begum Zia from Dhaka.
Aware of Begum Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment, Sheikh Hasina has often criticized her using offensive language and emphasizing her caste, revealing her personal animosity. Understanding Sheikh Hasina’s statements is crucial to grasping the dynamics within the political landscape.
On the flip side, scrutiny of Sheikh Hasina’s own family reveals a complicated situation, involving allegations of financial support from Pakistan during her stay in PG hospitals. None of her children reside with her; all are foreign nationals. The family’s discord, including marital issues with her husband, was extensively covered by Britain’s The Guardian in July 1999.
Quoting from The Guardian:
“Please don’t call the prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed,” they said. “She doesn’t like to use her husband’s name.”
“I told her she should not spend hours on decoration – maybe just one hour. I told her: ‘You should spend time reading. You cannot manage to do anything if you are watching Zee TV [an Indian satellite channel.]’ It is against our culture. She is old enough not to spend so much time on decoration. It is a poor country. She should be reading and working.”
This sheds light on the alleged contradictions in the family life of the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Bangladesh, serving as a reminder for those aligned with the Awami League to be cautious about casting stones while residing in a glass house. Sheikh Hasina’s past is well-documented both within the country and abroad.
