Sycophancy in journalism has become a major issue in Bangladesh. It refers to the practice of journalists flattering and praising political leaders in order to gain favor or benefits. This has been a longstanding problem in the country, particularly in relation to the current Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
Recently, a video from a press conference with Sheikh Hasina went viral, sparking widespread outrage and criticism. In the video, journalists can be seen asking the Prime Minister questions that were obviously scripted and aimed at glorifying her rather than addressing important issues facing the country.
One of the major issues that should have been addressed is the country’s struggling economy. Bangladesh is facing a terrible economic situation, with high inflation and a large population suffering from poverty. Instead of asking tough questions about the steps being taken by the government to overcome these issues, the journalists at the press conference seemed more interested in praising the Prime Minister.
It is disheartening to see that in a country where basic necessities like electricity and gas are not readily available for everyone, the journalists present at the press conference were more concerned with flattering the Prime Minister. This shows a lack of professionalism and integrity in the field of journalism.
The most shocking moment of the press conference was when one journalist referred to Professor Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, as a traitor and a money launderer. This is a clear example of how sycophancy has infiltrated the media in Bangladesh. The government and its supporters are using their influence to discredit and defame anyone who speaks out against them.
It is also concerning to see the Prime Minister’s family members being involved in such acts of sycophancy. Instead of holding a press conference to address important issues, they are using it as a platform to praise and defend their family member. This is a clear misuse of power and a violation of journalistic ethics.
Sheik Hasina is not the first leader to speak out against the war in Ukraine. In fact, many world leaders and organizations have condemned the violence and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. So, it is not only false but also disrespectful to those who have been actively working towards finding a solution to the crisis.
But what is even more concerning is the fact that a journalist would make such a claim without any evidence or proper research. It is the responsibility of journalists to report facts, not baseless statements that can potentially create confusion and harm the reputation of individuals and countries.
The role of journalists is to be the voice of the people, to ask tough questions and hold those in power accountable. However, in Bangladesh, it seems that journalism has become a means to gain personal benefits and favors from the government. This not only undermines the credibility of the media but also hinders the country’s progress.
It is high time for journalists in Bangladesh to break free from the chains of sycophancy and start performing their duties with honesty and integrity. The media should not be used as a tool to manipulate and control public opinion, but rather as a platform for unbiased and truthful reporting.
Sycophancy in journalism is a serious issue in Bangladesh. The recent viral video from the press conference with Sheikh Hasina is just one example of how journalists are using their positions to flatter and praise the government instead of performing their duties as watchdogs. It is imperative for the media to regain its credibility and serve the public interest rather than being the mouthpiece of those in power.
