Protesters in Bangladesh have gathered in the streets to demand justice for the more than 200 people killed during last month’s student-led protests about government job quotas.
Big protests happened on Saturday, as student leaders called for a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience until Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government resigns.
The group Students Against Discrimination, which organized the first protests, turned down an earlier offer to talk with Hasina.
“She must resign and face trial,” said Nahid Islam, the group’s leader, to a cheering crowd of thousands at a national monument in Dhaka, the capital.
According to Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury, the student movement has grown into a public movement, with people from all backgrounds joining the protests on Saturday to demand the government step down.
He also mentioned that there were clashes between protesters and police in the Gazipur and Comilla districts on the outskirts of the capital. On Saturday, Hasina invited the protest leaders to meet her at her official residence, Ganabhaban, saying the “door is open.”
“I want to sit with the protesting students and listen to them. I want no conflict,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, according to local media.
The prime minister has appointed three senior officials to talk with the protesters, reported Tanvir Chowdhury. The protests started over a quota system that reserved more than half of all government jobs for certain groups, a decision that Bangladesh’s top court has since reduced.
With about 18 million young people in Bangladesh unemployed, the move upset many graduates facing a severe job crisis.
The protests were mostly peaceful until police and pro-government student groups attacked demonstrators.
To restore order, Hasina’s government imposed a nationwide curfew, deployed troops, and shut down mobile internet services for 11 days.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said security forces acted with restraint but had to “open fire” to protect government buildings.
The government is facing growing criticism over the police crackdown, which resulted in the deaths of at least 200 people, including 32 children, and many injuries from pellet guns.
UN experts have called for an immediate end to the violence against protesters and accountability for human rights violations.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk urged the government to provide full details of its crackdown on protests and inform families about those killed, injured, or detained.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also called for an international investigation into the “excessive and lethal force against protesters.”
